June 25

Had a hunch from some reports I received on Friday that the fishing was going to be pretty good and that we would not have to go far to find them.  A boat that had left the dock before us reported a bit of action in 107 fow so we set lines in 100’ and began a west troll.  My crew informed me that Jim would go first — big mistake as we soon found out ‘cause Jim moved like Madea after Thanksgiving dinner resulting in us being 0 for 4 in the first hour.  We also had discovered that a wicked current was moving west to east and causing the fish to crossover lines the approached the boat.  The action slowed and we dipped into 75 fow when the deep rigger fired — no one home, starboard dipsy banged the bottom so I released it just as the port dipsy rod slamed to the water and line screamed off the reel.  I would have figured it for a snag, but we saw the fish make a big splash 600 feet behind the boat.  Greg—not wanting to watch Jim loose any more fish grabbed the dipsy rod.  I went back to retrieve the starboard dipsy to get it out of the way and as I was reeling it a Lake Trout thought it looked pretty good flying through the water and just about jerked the rod out of my hands when it hit.

Kenny landed the Lake Trout and after a 30+ min fight we eased the net under our largest fish of the year to date—a 27 pound KING SALMON.  Both of these dipsy fish hit flasher flys with the brusier coming on a green Spin Dr. and MOONSHINE Blue Jackal Fly.  We continued to fish the 75 fow area and had consistent action, most of the fish coming on the MOONSHINE Silver Carbons mup-rigged at 70’ and the MOONSHINE Oscar at 60’.  The action slowed later in the morning and acting on another tip we moved out to 165 fow and found a nice group of hungry 12# king salmon that enjoyed lunching on the MOONSHINE Carbons and Purple Nurple.

We had just a fantastic day of fishing landing 10 fish and loosing that many or more, (can’t blame it all on Jim as 3 fish were lost right behind the boat) a good day to start the summer season!!
