July 25, 2009
After an upwelling the warm water moves back toward shore and many times the bait and fish move with it. The cold water acts as a barrier and the fish stack up at the break. I figured that we may be able to cash in on this phenomena so I set up a high program and began to troll the warm side of the break. We had one fish hit but we did not land it, the fish were not there in any great concentration so we pulled lines and headed north.
We set lines at the 28N line and before we got the 3rd line in the 42’ rigger popped and a fish began to scream off line. We made a couple of tight circles to get the fish to the boat quickly and soon we had a nice 20 pound class king in the box. We continued north while setting lines then turned to go back through where we picked up the king. When we arrived at that spot the downriggers began to spring to life, first the gold 42 second spoon at 29’ then the regular 42 at 51 and the crazy b slider on the 42 foot rigger, all three fish steelhead. Then we reset the lines and trolled for 3 hours with only one hit and that fish took 300 feet of line then dropped the lure.
We began a troll to the south, dropped a Moonshine Carbon 14 to 61’ and a Purple Nurple to 51. The Carbon was the first to fire and we doubled up with a steelhead on a silver glow slider. We landed boat the king that hit the Moonshine and the rainbow, reset the lines and the Carbon 14 went again, followed by the dipsy pulling the Moonshine Blue Smoothie fly then the Purple Nurple we landed 2 of the 3 kings, we added a couple more steelhead to the box on the Moonshine Purple Nurple on the copper and down 71’. We ended the day 13 for 15 it was a Moonshine day!
