Red Cross Tournament May 10, 2011
Today I had the honor of fishing the Bank of America Red Cross Casting for Caring Tournament. This is an event held every year out of the Port of Rochester. This is a benefit tournament with two separate fishing trips, one in the morning and another in the afternoon.
Morning
The crew that fished with me in the morning was from Bank of America. Taking kids fishing is a specialty of Salmo Charters so I thought it was very cool to have Jack, a high school student on board! The plan was to set up in 40-50 FOW and troll north looking for salmon on the ledge before committing to fishing Lake Trout in the deep water. The plan worked — the first rod to take a hit was the 200’ copper and line began to scream off the reel. Candice grabbed the rod and after a 10 minute fight, expertly landed the gorgeous spring Chinook Salmon. We punched in a way point and began a circle, once we got back to the “spot” the 72’ rigger popped and Jack grabbed the rod. I could tell that the fish was a Lake Trout and that it was big as it stayed deep with it’s nose in the mud for several minutes before Jack was able to wrestle the big fish to the surface. The fish hit the deck and weighed in a 14 pounds, big enough to win a 1st place Lake Trout price for Jack and our crew. We continued to circle that spot and caught several more fish before heading to the scales and lunch at 11 am.

Afternoon
Shawn arrived at the dock before the rest of the AXIS Communication crew and he was PUMPED!!! He had never been fishing on Lake Ontario and was excited to give it a try. Once the rest of the crew arrived we headed out to the same area we fished in the morning. The fish had moved so be began searching. We missed a couple of releases then landed a small Lake Trout. The next fish to hit left us only with a story of the one “that got away”. The fish hit 92’ down over 140fow. At first it seemed like a small fish, but then I noticed that the line was going to the side of the boat, no — in front of the boat. Well…... before we caught up to the fish the hook came out, we never saw the fish, but I do know this — it was not a Lake Trout, most likely a King Salmon and probably a BIG ONE!!! |
