7-24   Woke up to calm winds inland, but when I arrived at the lake the wind was dead out of the North North East at 17 mph.  The waves were not huge, but they were all of three footers and promised a sporty ride.  My crew was not about to sit on the sidelines watching when they could be fishing.  I assured them that with 24 years of charter fishing under my belt, I knew the limits of our vessel and would not put them in danger, and out the creek we headed.  It was not reassuring seeing several 30 - 35’ vessels headed back to the dock from a lake that their lesser experienced captains had deemed “unfishable”, but we turned into the teeth of the waves and maintained a bouncy 9 mph to the North East.  We got to 140 fow, turned the boat to go with the waves and started setting lines.  We set out a 4 line spread, three down and 1 copper.  We did not go far before a rod popped, FISH ON!! And we boxed a nice steely!  We worked the area picking up another fish then headed north to 200 fow where we got into the fish pretty good landing several including a 20# class King Salmon.

The temp was changing fast, our 60’ downrigger began the day at 54 and now was 44 degrees.  When this happened the fish disappeared so we headed the boat south into 70 fow and turned to ride the waves back to port.  We found that the fish moved in as well and we hit 4 fish, landing another big salmon, on our west bound troll before ending our 6 hour trip with 8 nice fish.  A fine reward for braving the element’s of the day
