Monday - No wind, partly cloudy, warm

Flea-o-meter 8

Today we had 9 boy scouts and their leaders from Mercer County, PA.

We put 4 men on each boat and headed out of port at 6am sharp.  We were only fishing a half day so all the captains knew that it was important to find the fish early and get the rods hopping quickly.  Capt. Butch of Pisces was the first boat to stop at the 25.5N line, We went a half mile east and north of him and Capt. Dave on the Fishin’ Magician went about a half mile north and west of us.  Capt. Butch was the first to pop a rod and we were not far behind.  We got the big king that hit the glow frog at 50’ about 25’ from the net when the split ring at the hook broke and so did Tyler’s heart as the biggest fish of his life sank back to the depths.

We began a circle as did Pisces and rods continued to pop and fish continued to swim free.  Finally Tyler boated a 14” baby king and we began to hope that our boating percentages were about to get better.  Just then a screamer grabbed a frog from the 40’ rigger and headed for shore.  Justin, the oldest member of the crew battled the bruiser valiantly for over 30 minutes before we finally took the boat out of gear so Justin could pull the monster up from the depths and into the waiting net.

We got the lines reset and headed north west back to where we started our day.  All morning we had noticed that fish were feeding on the surface, we were watching one out in front of us and just as the boat got to the spot where the ripples were the fish grabbed the silver orange evil-eye slider and began to put on an aerial display.  That fish began a flurry on steelheads and the boys did a fine job landing several very nice fish.

Meanwhile on the other boats the action continued.  Capt. Dave had the WMD firing at 50’ and a chrome echip/hammer fly on the dipsy 150’ helped his crew to start filling the box.  Capt. Butch continued to get the hits with his leadcore rigs loaded with Apex type lures doing some damage.  All the boys had a great time fishing, God provided us with great weather making our job of finding the fish easy.  The boys were quick to the rods, ready to do battle and finished the day with a better understanding of what Lake Ontario sport fishing is all about.
