September 4
Began the morning on the wall, no takers, moved out to 70’. The screen did not have the impressive hooks like we saw earlier in the week so we began a bit of a zig zag troll between 50 and 80 fow. The first fish hit the Moonshine Stranglehold down 40’. This was a very special fish. 9 year old Timmy was on his first charter with Salmo Charters, but not his first on Lake Ontario. The story was that Timmy # 3 in rotation on his last trip and they only landed 3 fish with #3 being a bait sized rainbow. WELL……….. Upon hearing this I informed Tim that the boat rule was NO TALKING until the first fish was caught. To our delight and amazement Tim sat in the fishing chair — almost silent — until that first rod snapped up, to Tim’s delight the fish was a 20# class king salmon!! The largest fish he had ever caught!!!!
After the first fish we had a 5 hour lull as we tried various techniques and tactics fishing from 12 to 150 fow. We finally nailed some fish down in 120 fow and found a bait they would hit — the 600’ copper fished deep with a big yellow echip and fake cutbait. We did not get our “Salmo” for the day as we had 6 fisherpersons in the group and only 4 fish, but we did set personal big fish records for all four of the conquers onboard!!!
