5:30 AM, 2 foot chop out of the North West, surface temp 58.
Knowing that we had limited time for fishing on this half day trip we opted for an earlier start. While setting up the boat, I commented to another captain that I had to get out there get the limit by 10:30 and get back to the dock.
We splashed our way out to the 100 fow area giving the deck, windshield and top all a good washing with the spray from the waves. In no time we had the lines in and began a westbound troll into the chop. Our first fish hit around 6:20 but was a small rainbow trout, under the 21 inch size limit. The next fish hit the thumper, but was gone before we could get to the rod.
About 8 am I began to wonder if we were going to catch any fish at all, let alone a 12 fish limit by 11am. The screen was full of bait along the bottom, fish were showing up on the SONAR from 60’ to 90’ down, the chatter on the radio was spotty with only a few boats catching a single fish or two. I had already gone through a couple of lure changes. The lake had calmed a bit so I eased a 200’ copper rig out on a planer board. I also put a pair of Moonshine’s Bish’s Bruisers on the dash to charge up.
I reset the deep rigger with the Moonshine Bruisers and made a slow turn. Half way around the turn a fish hit the copper rig and buried the planerboard. That fish was almost to the boat when the deep rigger rod mupped with the Bruisers popped straight up. Paul was quick on the rod and began reeling to pick up the slack. The fish came quickly up through the water column then turned and peeled lined off the reel.
We netted the fish and the first mate began a slow circle. In the next hour the MOONSHINE BISH’S BRUISER took 6 fish including 2 mature kings, one that hit when we were almost done cleaning fish. We ended the morning boating just 2 fish shy of the four man limit, just short of my “lofty” early morning goal.
