One of our best days — Ever!! 6 AM, Flat Calm, Surface 62 degrees, 40 degrees 40 down.
I had been looking forward to fishing today since Dan called telling me he wanted to fish today and the crew would include several fathers and their sons.
We began our search in 50 fow in front of the pump house. We worked our way west and soon boated a nice 20 inch Brown Trout that hit a orange crush stinger behind a silver jet diver. We continued to troll in that area, but could not find any more hungry fish and floating moss caused problems for us keeping our lines clean.
We trolled north just a bit when the port dipsy set at 75’ began to scream. Ben grabbed the rod and soon bought a mature king to the boat. We circled the area for the next hour, but could not get another fish to hit. We continued north and found a few steelhead and rainbows to keep us busy.
June can be a challenging month for fishing on Lake Ontario. One day the fish will be stacked up and ready for the catching the next we may have to put on many miles between fish. What made this day a great day was the attitude of the fishermen. They were there to have a good time, enjoying each other’s company and waiting patiently in anticipation for the next fish to hit. At 6:30 when Chris boated the brown trout the day was already a success and Ben’s salmon made it doubly so. We did manage to make it all the way through rotation with each catching a fish and the boys each getting two! Too often fishing is all about the number of fish with the content of the fish box being the focus of attention (I am guilty of this also). Fishing should be about the memories created and those memories usually include people not just numbers. Spending a day with a crew that understood what fishing is made today one of the best days ever!
